Keeping an electric wheelchair clean is essential to maintain its performance, prevent breakdowns, and extend its lifespan. Proper cleaning protects both the frame and the electronic components while improving daily hygiene for the user.

The frame of an electric wheelchair should be cleaned carefully to prevent moisture from affecting the motors, connections, or electronic components. Before starting, turn off the wheelchair completely and unplug it from the charger.
Use a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with warm water and mild soap to clean the chassis, armrests, footrests, and exterior surfaces. Never use high-pressure water or soak the wheelchair directly, as moisture can seep into the electrical system.
For hard-to-reach areas such as joints or corners of the frame, use a soft-bristled brush. Once cleaning is complete, dry the entire surface with a clean cloth to prevent corrosion and keep the electric wheelchair in good condition.
Although many electric wheelchairs can withstand small splashes, they are not designed to get heavily wet or be exposed to prolonged rain. Water can damage the joystick, motors, battery, or internal circuits.
If the wheelchair gets wet accidentally, it should be dried as soon as possible with an absorbent cloth and left in a ventilated area before being used again. It is also advisable to check that there is no moisture in the connections, wheels, or electrical compartments.
To better protect the equipment, many users use waterproof covers when traveling outdoors or during rainy days.
The cushion of an electric wheelchair can accumulate moisture, sweat, or unpleasant odors with daily use, especially if urine leaks or spills occur. To clean it properly, remove the cover if it is detachable and wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
On the foam or interior, apply a gentle mixture of water and white vinegar to neutralize odors without damaging the material. Gently wipe with a clean cloth and avoid saturating the filling with liquid.
Then allow it to dry completely in a ventilated space before placing it back. Proper drying is essential to prevent odors from returning or internal moisture from building up.
