In 2008 Rafael Vidal survived the Spanair air crash. During a long recovery he depended entirely on assistive devices and saw, both as a user and as an engineer, that a significant part of healthcare had never been approached with advanced engineering criteria. What was missing was not intention: it was method.
In 2011 he founded INDESmed in Madrid to bring that method into medical products. His first fully in-house development was the world's lightest carbon-fiber crutch: 220 grams, 200 kg load capacity and a patented geometry that helps prevent tendonitis and hand pain. The first of fourteen patents.
Healthcare had gone decades without being approached with advanced engineering criteria. That was where all the work remained to be done.
INDESmed is today a HealthTech company with fourteen international patents and proprietary developments in mobility, vision, hearing and health. We design and manufacture in Madrid under ISO 13485 and healthcare licences, with a team of engineers in bioengineering, electronics and medical devices, and we clinically validate every development that requires it. The crutch was the first. It will not be the last.
Switching from conventional crutches to my INDESmed carbon fiber crutches was like landing in the 21st century after taking a flight in the 20th.... A joy!
